Book Proofreading and Editing

Proofreading and Editing Services

At Books By You, we engage in a thorough analysis of your work to achieve an excellent finished piece. Hence, we employ the skills of literature experts and language professionals to proofread and edit your manuscript.

Before proofreading and editing, we often allow your manuscript to go through the appraisal stage, where we make recommendations. Also, we have an established framework for proofreading and editing, and the processes are as follows.

Writers' Familiarisation

After the manuscript appraisal, we return your manuscript to you for another reading. This process enables you to familiarise yourself with the content and make corrections before our editing contribution.

At this stage, you are reconnecting yourself with the manuscript after a break. You are exposed to your errors and, therefore, correct them or allow improvements. Sometimes, the storyline is re-evaluated, or a part is rewritten.

Editors' Selections

We have a wide range of professionals and experts in literature and languages with long years’ experience in proofreading and editing. When you return your manuscript, we organise a group from our editorial team to oversee all the editing work on your document.

The benefits of utilising our professional services are numerous. One significant advantage is that you create an objective standard for your book. You cannot detect all the errors in your work because you are the originator and too familiar with the content. Allowing external hands enable a thorough analysis of the work and the production of brilliant work.

Our proofreading and editing services are in three stages.

First Editing Stage

The first stage offers a structure to your work. At this stage, the chronology of the book is evaluated. Usually, a book, mostly fiction, may start its story from the beginning and dive to the middle and the end. In other cases, it starts from the back. Some books are in parts or sections, but each must be reviewed and arranged appropriately to ensure a logical flow.

Likewise, phrases and paragraphs are examined, and sometimes, typographical errors. This process does not involve a deviation from your original content but an improvement that aids better understanding. We review the outlook so your audience could have the best experience with your book.

Also, we run a plagiarism test and make corrections. We also provide references and acknowledge quotes and external sources.

In case your work has been previously edited professionally, we only conduct light structural proofreading and editing.

Second Editing Stage

It is the preceding stage before the final proofreading. It involves checking for punctuations, spelling errors, repetitions, grammatical and typographical errors, and making adjustments. We have a style guide that editors follow in this process. At most, we achieve a 99.9% accuracy level.

Third Editing Stage

This stage is the last proofreading before the physical proof copy. We go through the whole document once again and make necessary corrections, after which we send the result of each stage to you with modifications made in highlighted form. We also give recommendations which you may heed or not.

Test-Run Stage

This stage does not include reading or editing. Instead, we gather a few people as audience samples and allow them to read through the edited piece. They provide an objective review of the work, which we utilise to make final adjustments to the job.

Also, we are careful with the people we select to read our works and employ those already familiar with the subjects.
